Politicians giving themselves raises...really?

So councilors in Torbay, NL looked at their agenda, didn't see anything on it and figured "Hey we must be doing a pretty good job, lets pat ourselves on the back and give ourselves a raise!"

The motion before council now is the approve an immediate pay increase of 48%. They apparently hired a consultant to look at their current salaries and to compare them to other municipalities pay rates. Based on his recommendation, the council in Torbay decided to motion for pay increase. My only problem with this is that the sitting council will see immediate benefit.

It simply cannot be ethically correct to give yourself a pay raise in public office. This increase that they are proposing should not take effect until after the current term ends. There should in fact be legislation barring such practices. All pay raises should be scheduled to take effect after the current term ends. That's how the Americans do it, and for once, I think they got it right.

(Edit on May 1st)
The Americans are showing us up some more. Congress just passed a motion that will rescind their upcoming automatic pay raise. That's right, while municipalities in this province and even MHAs have been voting their own pay increases, United States Congress members have voted against getting a raise.
